WHY INTERDEPENDENCE ?
The old aspiration? Independence. The new reality: Interdependence.
Every challenge we face today from climate and crime to technology and markets, and communications and public health is global in character. Yet the institutions of democracy we rely on to address these challenges are still locked up inside sovereign states pursuing the old logic of independence. But in an interdependent world of diseases without borders, we also need citizens without borders – democracy without borders. Which means if we are to survive interdependence and flourish in liberty, we must either globalize democracy or democratize globalization.
Berkshire International Film Festival Screening of The Island President with Interdependence Lunch & Discussion 6/1
Leah and Benjamin Barber and the Interdependence Movement are pleased to invite you to a special screening of the remarkable new documentary about the Maldives, The Island President, at the Berkshire International Film Festival on Friday, June 1 at 11:15 AM (at the Triplex in Great Barrington, MA). Andrea Nucifero, candidate for the 1st Congressional District seat in Massachusetts will also be joining us.
The film, by director Jon Shenk of Actual Films, is a touching and poignant study of the former President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldive Islands, a tiny island republic fated to disappear under the Indian Ocean this century if global warming and the rise of the oceans continue. It is a wake-up call to the complacent, to climate change deniers, and to politicians unwilling to fight against complacency.
The Interdependence Movement is co-sponsoring the screening with BIFF and invites you to the film and to a dutch treat luncheon afterwards that will feature lively debate with Leah, Dr. Barber, Andrea Nucifero and other Berkshire environmentalists. To see the film and attend the luncheon, please email info@interdependencemovement.org or call (212) 247-5433 by May 21st to make a reservation (the cost is $45 for both the luncheon and the film ticket) or if you would just like to see the film, please purchase tickets online here.
Connecting the Dots--Interdependence Movement & 350.org
On Climate Impacts Day, 5/5/12, Leah Barber helped facilitate a "Connect the Dots" event on the sailboat Clearwater on the Hudson River alongside Manhattan. In our interdependent world, it is critical to highlight the connections between extreme weather and climate change, and Interdependence Movement activists will continue working with 350.org and others to make these connections clear. Continue the campaign at climatedots.org!
New Interdependence Movement Video: 'A Declaration of Interdependence'
On September 12, 2011, the short film "A Declaration of Interdependence" premiered in front of a live audience at Interdependence Day IX in New York City as it was simultaneously featured on YouTube, gathering nearly 100,000 views. Now, filmmaker Tiffany Shlain and her team have created a tailored version of the short film (the first in the Let It Ripple film series) for the Interdependence Movement. Watch the video below:
Interdependence Movement Review of The Island President
The campaign to combat climate change often feels like a David vs. Goliath struggle, with activists attempting to counter the influence of entrenched and moneyed interests and prod recalcitrant governments to action. But this abstraction is made clearer in a new documentary focused on the former President of the Maldives called The Island President. President Mohamed Nasheed, known as "Anni" to his supporters, is a man of small stature governing a tiny archipelago in the Indian Ocean who has emerged as a towering figure in the global campaign to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. Given unprecedented access to a sitting head of state, the filmmakers followed President Nasheed and his advisers as they prepared for and negotiated at the 2009 Copenhagen Summit. What the audience gets is a story that is deeply personal yet embedded within the wider frames of global governance, democracy, and anthropogenic climate change.
The 1st Interdependent Kindergarten of Heidelberg Expands
"The message of Interdependence Day has been received and turned into practise."
Jakob Köllhofer, Director of the German-American Institute
Following the objectives of the Interdependence movement, DAI - the German-American Institute of Heidelberg, Germany - has just signed a contract that will deepen its commitment to interdependence.
Their international kindergarten, the 1st Interdependent Kindergarten of Heidelberg will be welcoming 75 children into a newly purchased classroom building that will include a garden and 600 square meters of forest near Old Heidelberg. The kindergarten strives to prepare young children for an interdependent world by teaching them a respect for mutual understanding and learning at an early age.
